Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should

messages to increase patient-provider

·Utilize simple sentences, analogies and visual graphics to
increase health literacy among patients during
counseling
sessions prior to the initiation of HIV
treatment
·Outline current guidelines for the treatment of naïve HIV
patients and how to clearly communicate treatment
options to
patients to determine which antiretrovirals to use to avoid treatment failure
Purpose Statement
The purpose
of this activity is to increase the knowledge and
competency of nurse practitioners in utilizing
health literacy techniques to communicate important
educational messages to patients and to heighten the
effectiveness of pre-treatment counseling for the
treatment naïve HIV patients.
