Target Audience

This program is intended for nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers treating HIV-positive patients. Participants should have a basic knowledge of HIV disease and its treatment.

 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

·         Explain what is meant by easy-to-understand language of treatment messages to increase patient-provider

        communications

·         Utilize simple sentences, analogies and visual graphics to increase health literacy among patients during counseling

        sessions prior to the initiation of HIV treatment

·         Outline current guidelines for the treatment of naïve HIV patients and how to clearly communicate treatment options to

        patients to determine which antiretrovirals to use to avoid treatment failure

 

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this activity is to increase the knowledge and competency of nurse practitioners in utilizing health literacy techniques to communicate important educational messages to patients and to heighten the effectiveness of pre-treatment counseling for the treatment naïve HIV patients.

Instructions for Credit

To receive credit, it is required to 1). read each slide and 2). read the accompanying speaker’s notes for each slide (PowerPoint version) or listen to the audio of the speaker’s notes (Flash version) that accompanies each slide. Upon finishing the content, complete the CME Post Test, Course Evaluation and Credit Application online to receive your certificate. You must receive a test score of at least 75% and respond to all evaluation questions to receive a certificate. CE certificates will be mailed approximately 6-8 weeks after submission. There are no costs/fees for this activity.
