Lillian Thiemann
Co-Founder & President

Lillian Thiemann is the co-founder and President of Visionary Health Concepts, a health and medical education company specializing in HIV and hepatitis (www.freehivinfo.com and www.freehepatitisinfo.com), and the co-chair of the Women’s HIV Collaborative of New York (www.womenscollaborative.com). A former IVDU living with both hepatitis C and HIV, Lillian feels she has been very fortunate to have many opportunities to serve the community through her work with Visionary Health Concepts as well as with the health and advocacy organizations she devotes so much time and energy to. Some items of note and relevance include:

  • Writer and editor of nationally-distributed HIV and hepatitis educational programs for patients and healthcare providers (too numerous to list) that are recommended by national/state coalitions, libraries and the University of Illinois: http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/aidsbkrv/No53.html#952

  • Community representative for FDA review in 2003 of a product for the treatment of hepatitis C (Pegasys®) http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/ac/02/transcripts/3909T1.htm

  • Writer of the first, nationally distributed HIV/HCV patient education booklet in 1999, “Double Jeopardy: The HIV/HCV Co-Infection Handbook” adopted by states across US in their own HCV materials:

  • Collaborated on the production a national patient survey, InfoDyne, which included >50% HIV/Hepatitis co-infected individuals (n=662), and presented the results at US Conference on AIDS 2003:

  • Founding member of Hepatitis Action and Advocacy Coalition (HAAC), the Hep C Advocacy Coalition and the Women’s HIV Collaborative of New York

Visionary Health Concepts is a community-based education company that focuses on providing language-appropriate education to individuals across the spectrum of healthcare in HIV and hepatitis, including consumers, secondary providers and physicians.  Visionary Health designs its educational programming based on research it conducts to discover how various types and formats of education work for the targeted audiences and what will make them most effective.  An example of this is InfoDyne, a study conducted in conjunction with the University of Illinois that surveyed 662 diverse HIV+ patients. The study was designed to help Visionary Health better understand the information-seeking and learning dynamics of HIV+ individuals, how specific groups and subgroups best obtain information, and how this behavior affects their treatment outcomes.  Visionary Health also conducts surveys and research in the physician community to better understand how they access, evaluate and apply clinical trial data to their clinical practices.

Krista Heitzman Martel
Vice President

Krista Heitzman Martel graduated from the University of Michigan in 1993, where she majored in Economics and French. Not long after, she learned her sister was HIV-positive, and was deeply affected by the stigmas surrounding this diagnosis. Krista then moved to New York, and coincidentally found a job in a medical education company that specialized in HIV. Frustrated with the amount of accessible information available to her sister and family, she was thrilled when given the opportunity to help develop a women's peer-based treatment education training program - the HIV University Training Program. This program, based on the successful model created by W.O.R.L.D (Oakland, CA), introduced Krista to many amazing treatment and peer advocates who further strengthened her convictions on the need for appropriate HIV education.

Over the next 5 years, Krista became dedicated to developing and managing several programs that were targeted to empower HIV-positive women in both their treatment-making decisions and in accessing healthcare that fit their lifestyles. She continues this dedication in her work at Visionary Health Concepts by striving to develop and design various programs that are both educational and empowering to the people they reach.
